★★★ The vaccine is intended for individuals aged 2 to under 19 years old. It is administered as a single spray of 0.1 mL into each nostril. As of April 2023, it has been approved in 36 countries and regions. In Japan, starting in the 2024–25 season, this vaccine became available, and from the 2025–26 season it is covered by public subsidy. Compared with the traditional inactivated influenza vaccine, no clear differences in overall effectiveness have been demonstrated (see reference site below). However, because this is a live attenuated vaccine, there are some important differences to be aware of:
(1) Live attenuated formulation – The vaccine virus replicates in the nasal passages for a short period after administration, which is how it stimulates the immune response.
(2) Possible short-term symptoms – While the virus is replicating in the nose, some people may experience runny nose, nasal congestion, fever, or other mild symptoms. In clinical trials, the most common events (≥10%) were nasal congestion/runny nose (59.2%), cough, sore throat, and headache. These usually began within a week and resolved in about a week. Importantly, these rates were not significantly higher than in the placebo group.
(3) Effect on flu tests – For about a week after vaccination, the vaccine virus may cause positive results on rapid influenza diagnostic tests.
(4) Precautions regarding close contacts – Because the vaccine virus can rarely spread to others through droplets or contact, the package insert advises avoiding close contact with people who are severely immunocompromised for 1–2 weeks after vaccination. In addition, it is recommended to avoid close contact during that period with pregnant individuals (not eligible to receive the vaccine because of theoretical fetal risks) and with children under 2 years of age (not eligible because of risk of respiratory complications).

♯ As of May 8, 2025, there is a nationwide supply shortage. If you wish to receive the vaccine, please call our clinic to confirm availability before making an online reservation.
If you are interested in a vaccine not listed above, please contact us first by phone or email at contact@parkeastmed.com.
